About Tasmania Mines

Tasmania Mines Pty Ltd is a privately owned company. We own and operate on the Kara mine site, the primary source of the magnetite supplied to our customers worldwide. The mine site is located 35km south of the Port of Burnie in North West Tasmania, Australia.

The mine has been productive since 1978 and the mine resources exceed 20Mt. With our current processing facility, overburden and tailings storage facilities our planned mine life is over 25 years. The Kara ore body has favourable properties and through our processing plant that is specifically designed to produce high-quality natural magnetite powders, it is possible for us to meet our customer’s expectations.

The Kara ore body also contains scheelite (a tungsten mineral) which is recovered as a by-product through our magnetite processing activities.

Tasmania Mines offer a wide range magnetite products and other industrial minerals to our prospective and existing customers.

Sustainability

The Kara Mine site is situated in the ‘Valentine Region’, near the foothills of Mount Valentine, at an elevation of around 500m above sea level. The region receives reliable rainfall of around 1500mm each year and will occasionally see snow during winter and spring.

The Emu River runs through the middle of the mine site, and is home to both Platypus and Giant Freshwater Crayfish. Operations at the site are designed to minimise unnecessary impacts on the environment. Important activities we do to minimise unnecessary impacts are:

  • Runoff water from operational areas is treated via settlement ponds prior to release into the river.
  • Rehabilitation of overburden materials is completed concurrently with placement, with longer term plans to place all overburden materials in pit.

The risk of adverse environmental impacts at the Kara Mine site is significantly reduced by the natural properties of the overburden and ore that make it non-acid generating. The site also reuses almost 95% of its raw water inputs.

Critical to enabling the site to remain in operation for over 40 years, independent of typical commodity cycles, is we employ a small and skilled work force of around 60 people, all locally based in the North West Tasmania community.

Distribution

Our magnetite products are moved daily by road trucks from the Kara mine site to the port of Burnie in North West Tasmania. The port is equipped for both bulk and containerised exports.

From the port of Burnie our magnetite products are shipped to our stock locations in Newcastle, Gladstone and Mackay for our local customers and exported all over the world to our international customers.
